Career Jumpstart for Your Post–Labor Day Job Search

After Labor Day, it's go-time to land your dream job!

It’s hard to think about a career jumpstart while eating ice cream by the beach. August has that weird in-between vibe. Your brain is still in “patio happy hour” mode, but the stores are full of back-to-school sales and pumpkin spice is lurking. Here in Seattle a few leaves are changing color, but I refuse to believe summer is over…yet Labor Day is next week.

Labor Day isn’t just the unofficial end of summer—it’s the unofficial start of go time in the job market. If you want a new job by the new year, you gotta start now.

If you’ve been feeling restless in your current role (or downright miserable), the weeks after Labor Day are prime time to start your search. This summer was notoriously slow in the job market, but I’ve talked with several employers who are waiting to post their new jobs until after Labor Day.

Here’s how to shift your mindset from summer slowdown to strategic action.

1. Treat the Next Few Weeks as a Warm-Up, Not a Sprint

You don’t have to go from beach towel to job board overnight. Use the tail end of summer to:

  • Reflect on what’s working and not working in your current role (I love a good pros and cons list!)
  • Write down your non-negotiables for your next job (pay, culture, growth opportunities)
  • Revisit your resume and LinkedIn profile with fresh eyes to see what story they’re telling and start thinking about how you want to tell your story differently this time

2. Embrace Why a Career Jumpstart Post–Labor Day Matters

This summer hiring has been s l o w. Everyone is back vacationing and decision-makers have been out of the office.

But come September? The pace picks up. Hiring managers are back, priorities are set, and they want to make key hires before the holidays. That means now is the perfect time to prepare so you can hit the market while it’s hot.

You want to apply within the first two weeks of a job being posted. Tbh, as fast as you can in this packed job market. The competition is thick and some jobs are closing applications before their stated deadline.

3. Get Clarity on Your Strengths

You’re not just looking for any old job—you’re looking for the right fit. That means you need to get crystal clear on:

  • Your strengths and how they’ve evolved since your last search
  • The type of roles and environments where you thrive
  • The “secret sauce” you bring to each and every job that makes you stand out

The clearer you are on your value, the faster the right opportunities find you. Your materials are a match making exercise for the hiring manager: show how you uniquely fit what they’re looking for.

4. Build Your Search Stamina

A job search is a trust-building exercise between you and the hiring manager. It takes time, energy, and a mix of strategy and self-care. Start building your stamina now by:

  • Blocking weekly time for customized applications, networking, and interview prep
  • Practicing your stories out loud so you sound confident (and not rehearsed)
  • Listing out ways for how you’ll cope with the emotional ups and downs (go beyond “take a deep breath” and move towards “call a trusted friend who can give me the pep talk I need”)

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. The goal is to show up each time as your authentic self until you cross the finish line into a role you love.

5. Make a Commitment to Your Career Jumpstart

If you know you want a new role by the end of the year, commit to yourself now. Most job searches take 3-6 months.

Make a commitment to yourself that you’re going to spend the next few months finding the job that fits who you are today. That you will closely vet each position, listen to your gut intuition, and stay true to your goals.

Carve out time in your schedule, clean off your desk, color-coordinate your Google folders, and get your career jumpstart going!

This commitment will guide every step you take after Labor Day—and trust me, clarity is the best job search fuel there is.
