Beyond Salary Negotiation

Examining harmful hiring practices

Yesterday I taught our “Make it Rain for You! Salary Negotiation Tactics” webinar for AFP Advancement Northwest chapter, and the conversations was ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ as always! I love talking money and pushing through taboos. [whispers] Next, I’m going to start talking about wealth building for nonprofit professionals.

But what’s so interesting about teaching about salary negotiation, is you also uncover shitty hiring practices. ๐Ÿ˜ก The system is rigged to lowball applicants and to get their labor for as cheap as possible. The staff of nonprofits also cannot access “profit” in their salary, right? Oh, except the (typically white male) CEOs at the top, but I digress…

My goal is to put the tools and tactics into the hands of ALL nonprofit professionals so it’s a fair negotiation on BOTH sides of the table. I want the applicant to feel valued and respected with the final offer. I’m taking this webinar on the road, so if you want to bring it to your professional chapter, contact me!

But back to shitty hiring practices ๐Ÿ‘€

I heard that one organization says internally, “We only will pay 50-75% of the range, never the top of the range.” And, I say to applicants: why would you want to work for an organization that is already being deceitful? If they will lie on a public job description, what else are they hiding?

As job applicants we should be wary as f*ck of being taken advantage of. How many people come to me miserable after the traumas they’ve faced at work and it takes so much more work to build back up the confidence to shine in a job search.

So I say, be skeptical of what it promised during interviews, ask tough questions and analyze the responses, and get EVERYTHING in writing.

When people come to me and say, “I don’t want to be greedy during a salary negotiation,” and I say, “Don’t you think your org is trying to be greedy to get your talent for a bargain price?”

Be picky. Be expensive. Be brilliant.๐ŸŒŸ
